Blogging Tips

The 5|Reasons why I would not read your blog (And how to fix them)

Why I would not read your blog

Even before I started blogging, two years ago, I’ve always been an avid blog reader. I read blogs for fun, for information, for reviews, for inspiration and for every other thing. The problem is there are a gazillion blogs out there and I’m almost always confused on which one to choose. I usually pick a couple to read based on the preview images or headlines and stick with the ones I like best. There are many reasons why I would not read your blog but I like to give all blogs a chance at first.

But once I’m on your blog and you have my attention, I beg you and your blog not to dash my hopes. If that happens, I will probably never visit your blog again. Life is too short for forced friendships, bad outfits and bad blogs.

I am not a blogging expert but the information I will share today is my personal experience on why I would not read your blog. It sure would be helpful in shaping your blog and making it more appealing to your readers.

WHY I WOULD NOT READ YOUR BLOG

1. Bad blog layouts

This is the first impression I have of your blog and we all know that first impressions last the longest. Ensure the theme of your blog suits your brand and fits the niche you are writing for.

For example, if you write horror fiction (I’ve never visited a blog in this niche before), then maybe use a darker background than normal but if you’re in every other niche, please use a white background. Personally, once I visit your site and it has a dark background – it automatically reduces the time I spend on there and would probably make me not read your blog.

The blog theme used also matters a lot! I know premium themes are expensive (and you may not be ready to invest that much) but there are so many beautiful free themes as well. The main point here is ensure your theme is clean and simple so I can actually focus on your content.

Useful post Five free minimalist themes

Now formatting, once I visit your blog and I see that the font is inconsistent (e.g changes from paragraph to paragraph) or the font is an ancient cursive I can’t even read, then you’ve lost me. I can’t strain my eyes to read your blog when there are so many other blogs, you know.

2. ADS

I know we all have to make a living, but please consider me – your blog reader. You can’t have unrelated ads all over your posts and blog and expect me to enjoy my experience on there. I once visited this blog and literally, every time I visited a new page – there will be a popup. That’s a huge turn off for me. Flashing ads and Google Adsense on every side bar space is also a no no.

Did you know – In August 2016, Google announced that sites that use mobile popups on pages that                                         users visit directly from the Google mobile search results “may not rank as highly”.

This means that them popups may actually be affecting your ranking on Google search. If I were you, I’d get rid of them at least on mobile as that’s the most inconvenient.

3. Lack of Useful Content/Misleading Headings

This is the absolute worst. Imagine searching for ‘how to wear a hat’ on Google and then visiting the 5th search result. On getting to the blog, you realize that the post is about where to buy hats from and is not useful to your search. In my mind, that blog is already blacklisted for offering misleading content.

I once saw somewhere that as a blogger, you have to provide so much value that readers cannot ignore you. This should be the goal of everyone with a blog, to provide value within their niche. To achieve this, you should be very clear on two things:

  1. What is the key thing I want my readers to gain from this post?
  2. Who are my target readers?

Are you trying to inspire someone’s next outfit? Teach a new skill? Or even educate about recent happenings? You need to understand this first before your readers will.

4. Blogs that have no personality

Yes yes, I know you’re trying to teach me a new skill but please let your personality shine through. Be yourself! There are many blogs out there that have no soul and when reading them I hear a generic computed voice in my head. Don’t let your blog be like that or I would not read your blog.

One blogger that does this perfectly is Ifeoma of drapedinbasics.com. The main reason why I’m a consistent reader of her blog, is because I like her personality which shines through her content.

5. You don’t utilize social or newsletters

Most of the blogs I visit consistently are the ones I’m subscribed to. I don’t always go to check up if my favorite bloggers have posted because I already receive a notification in my email. I might like your blog, but because you don’t publicize enough on social media – I may never get to read some of your best works.

For WordPress bloggers, the Jetpack subscription is very useful as it sends out notifications automatically to followers. (You should follow me here. )

Those are the main things that would make me not read your blog. I know everyone has different views about this and I would love to know your views. What would stop you from reading a blog?

Omg, I am with you on the pop ups. When I’m in the middle of reading and it just pops up smh. At the same time I wonder is that the best way to get subscribers 🤷

Like!!! It’s the worst. I know I never subscribe when those popups come up. I just press cancel.

    Lesson learnt ma’am.
I can relate to the ‘ads’ part tho. I hate it when i’m reading a post and then ads keep popping. It’s quite disturbing!
    Thanks for this boo❤❤❤

I love this post. I totally agree with the points raised. I don’t care how fine your blog is if your content is not 👌 or your grammar isn’t on point best believe I’m not returning to your blog. If you’re so good I don’t even mind if you’re not active on social media I’ll still hunt for you because you’re that good.
    Great one Subomi!
I’ll love to reshare this when I can or even do something similar. I hope I’m allowed ☺

Yes, I hate when grammar and tenses is all over the place. Shows me you don’t value your work enough to make it good. Yes you can definitely repost or do a similar post. Just link back:)

I liked this post a lot, however, it seems that you have a typo above. “You have to be provide so much value…” under the no useful content section. I couldn’t find a link to email you privately but with all of this talk of hating grammatical errors, I thought that you would want to know. Cheers!

    Hello ,

I saw your tweets and thought I will check your website. Have to say it looks very good!
I’m also interested in this topic and have recently started my journey as young entrepreneur.

I’m also looking for the ways on how to promote my website. I have tried AdSense and Facebok Ads, however it is getting very expensive. Was thinking about starting using analytics. Do you recommend it?
Can you recommend something what works best for you?

I also want to improve SEO of my website. Would appreciate, if you can have a quick look at my website and give me an advice what I should improve: http://janzac.com/
(Recently I have added a new page about FutureNet and the way how users can make money on this social networking portal.)

I have subscribed to your newsletter. 🙂

Hope to hear from you soon.

    P.S.
Maybe I will add link to your website on my website and you will add link to my website on your website? It will improve SEO of our websites, right? What do you think?

    Regards
    Jan Zac

I am all for using blogging as a source of income, but it is also an extension of the blogger. Throwing too many pop ups at the audience is basically saying, “I’m an amateur! Pay me, pay me, pay me!” Definitely not a good look. I may continue reading the article, but I certainly don’t even look at the pop up after the first or second. Immediate X out.

Yes, one popup is okay but when it gets repetitive, that’s when I take my leave.

So relatable Subomi. Especially the inconsistent fonts and tiny fonts, I cringe when I see this.

I also have an issue reading a very long post without sub headings, it’s stressful and so wrong.

How about reading a blog post with lots of simple errors: their instead of there, writing i, wrong paragraphing and lexicon use, I just unsubscribe if I am subscribed to your blog.

Tiny type in long paragraphs. Also gifs, I follow one person because I like her writing and personality, but there are gifs galore. I have to scroll past them to read as I find them distracting.

Hmmm gifs, I think for me it depends on how they are used. I’ve read some good blogs that used gifs to make their content even better while some are just bleh with the gifs

I love scrolling through Pinterest, and drinking my afternoon coffee. I stop on something I might like to know about because it has a great headline, and boom…not what I thought it was going to be. I hate that. Then with the pop-ups. No thank you. Bye bye.
I love what you wrote. Couldn’t agree more.

Popups definitely! I know when I go to a blog, if I get a popup before I`ve even started reading, I don`t bother to read, just go away.
On mine, I have a popup, but it only comes up when you`re mostly done reading the page…though if others share the same opinion as you in that regard, I might fix it a little.

Having an exit triggered popup makes so much more sense than a popup that comes up on every new page!

Personality should show through…unless it’s a depressing personality! I had to leave a blog halfway through a post because the sprinkling of what was wrong in the author’s life throughout the post was getting tedious!
