My Trip from Nigeria to Amsterdam + 5 things to do with no money

Subomi Salami of My Fashion Musings in Amsterdam

One of my goals for 2018 (though not shared in this post) was to travel. I had no idea how it was going to happen or where I was going to get the money from but I just really wanted the travel section of my blog to pop. I really believe in speaking things into existence and kept telling my friends/family about how I was going to travel from Nigeria to Amsterdam soon. It was just cheap talk at this time.

Lo and behold, last week I traveled from Nigeria to Amsterdam, Netherlands and Paris, France without spending a dime on transportation and accommodation costs. How that happened is a story for another day.  I left on a direct flight to Amsterdam through a KLM flight but when I got to the Schiphol Airport, I was told my box was missing and would be found within 48 hours. My whole life was literally in that box and I regretted not taking the advice of the many travel blogs that said to pack a change of clothing/important stuff in my hand luggage. Luckily, the flight reimburses expenses on necessary items and I used that opportunity to buy an outfit from the airport. Though my money has not been reimbursed yet, I am positive that it would be.

I traveled with a very small amount of money which I had budgeted for just food and items that I can’t just leave behind. But I still wanted to have fun and make the most of my time there so I had to look for alternative ways. Today I will be sharing tips to enjoy yourself in Amsterdam or any other place really with no or a minute amount of money on you.

Utilize the colored walls and boutique shops

In Amsterdam, there are so many beautiful places to take pictures, with the unique cafes, boutique shops and the age-old feeling of the city. I definitely did not let that go to waste and took a few beautiful pictures in each of these spots. Subomi Salami of My Fashion Musings in Amsterdam Subomi Salami of My Fashion Musings in AmsterdamSubomi Salami of My Fashion Musings in Amsterdam

Ride a bicycle

I was surprised to see more bicycles than cars on the roads and it was very cheap to rent a bicycle from my hotel. Although public transportation is very effective, this is also a good way to get out and explore the city.

Take a free tour

Everywhere I turned,  tourists were in groups to be taken round the city for free. This is a very good way to learn more about the historical places and tourist locations. If travelling alone, it is also a good way to meet other travelers and socialize.

See the Red light district

This is one of the major tourist attractions in Amsterdam. The Netherlands is a very different place from Nigeria such that marijuana and prostitution is legal and government regulated. The red light district is basically a group of streets where sex workers display in glass boxes to get paid. I had never seen anything like it before and I was truly fascinated. Sadly pictures are not allowed but you can check on Google for more insight.

Walk and soak it all in

I walked a lot! And I tried to stay away from social media as much as possible too. Soak in the experiences especially if you are like me and aren’t sure when next you’d be travelling

Extra tip: Start within your means, Explore your city first then other cities in your country.

Travelling from Nigeria to Amsterdam really was a therapeutic experience for me. How well traveled are you and how have your experiences been so far. Please share in the comments section!

ah that’s great that they reimbursed you! The Dutch people are so tall though and I feel like a child whenever I’m at the airport – especially in toilets! I can’t even see myself in the mirror hahaah

I have been to Amsterdam years ago and loved the city, in particular all the awesome museums with works of the Dutch Masters. Was not aware of the free tours though. Your post brought back some fond memories.

I’ve always wanted to go to Amsterdam, the closest I got was the airport when having a connecting flight but I will have to make it happen one day.

Those are all good things to do there. I think I would love to get on the bicycle and ride around the town, just taking in all of the sights, sounds and smells of Amsterdam. I am interested to know in another post what you did to be able to do to be able to go without spending a dime. 🙂
